The "green Irpinia" is one of the most beautiful territory in Italy with an extraordinary variety of typical local products, real glory of the region. The chestnut industry is located in the surroundings of Mount Partenio, near the Municipality of  Mercogliano, Ospedaletto  D'Alpinolo and Summonte where is produced the famous "Chestnut of the priest" (dried and then softened), marronata (chestnut jam) and chestnut flour. Irpinia is also well known for its large production of nuts used by many Italian multinational companies  for spreads and snack foods. Nuts are also used by local industries for the production of a traditional nougat called in dialect "cupeto", whose mysterious origins date back to distant China, where it was made with almonds and then imported by the Arabs in the Mediterranean.
